NewsMohamed Salah receives FWA Footballer of the Year honour

The Liverpool No.11 received the individual honour for the second time, having gained 48 per cent of the vote from journalists in the FWA as recognition of a stunning 2021-22 season.

In 46 appearances this term in all competitions, Salah has scored 30 goals and provided 15 assists, helping the Reds lift the Carabao Cup, reach the finals of the Champions League and Emirates FA Cup, and remain in the race for the Premier League title.

“It feels great,” said the Egyptian, who also won the accolade in 2018, at the Footballer of the Year Dinner at The Landmark hotel in London.

“First of all, I want to thank everybody who voted for me. Of course, journalists are a big part of the football family. Hopefully we can win some more this season.”

He added: “I just try to enjoy my football and enjoy my time at the club, help the team to win trophies – that’s the most important thing.”

Jürgen Klopp’s side will face Chelsea in the FA Cup final at Wembley on May 14 and then Real Madrid in the Champions League decider a fortnight later.

Next, they return to Premier League duty, hosting Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday night, with Liverpool a point behind Manchester City with four games remaining.

Salah said: “We have been together for five years now, most of us – some players more than five years. We know what it takes to win.

“We just try to give our 100 per cent. We need to focus on each game. You could see that also in the last game, we were 2-0 down in an away game and we managed to come back. That’s really important, for our mindset as well for the next game.

“We have that mindset that we can win any trophy.”
