The first chapter of Ronnie Moran’s legendary service to Liverpool was as a committed and consistent player in the latter half of the 20th century.

Mr. Liverpool’s journey with the club would last just shy of 50 years, beginning when he joined as a 15-year-old.

Moran signed professional terms in 1952 and debuted for the senior team in the same year, away at Derby County.

The left-back was a bit-part player in his first few seasons but established himself in the side from 1955-56 onwards.

And there could certainly be no doubt about Moran’s immense commitment to the cause. On a Saturday in March 1957, he helped Liverpool win a match at Anfield and got married.

By the time Bill Shankly arrived in 1959, Moran was club captain, but he struggled with injury early in the Scot’s reign. He did qualify for a Second Division winner’s medal in 1962, though.

Two years later, he enjoyed the highlight of his playing career by lifting the First Division title, after appearing 35 times on the way to that championship.

“A 100 per cent lad,” teammate Ron Yeats described him as. “Good full-back, he used the ball well, he was strong, good in the air.”

Moran’s last appearances for Liverpool were in both legs of a European Cup semi-final with Internazionale in 1965, before Shankly offered the invitation for him to join the famous Boot Room.

Having been a winner on the pitch himself, over the next three decades he would be a relentless driving force from the side as the Reds lifted a huge number of trophies.
