Liverpool supporters have watched Joe Gomez turn from boy to man in his 11 years at the club.

Currently the longest-serving member in the squad, the talented defender has had incredible highs and lows during his Anfield career.

Having joined from Charlton Athletic in 2015, the 18-year-old Gomez was thrust into Premier League action from the outset by Brendan Rodgers – initially as a left-back, the first of many positions he would operate in.

Gomez’s qualities have seen him entrusted everywhere across the back line and even as a defensive midfielder.

His story as a Red cannot be told without the injury hardships he has emerged stronger from.

Gomez’s debut season on Merseyside was cut short by a serious knee injury a few days after Jürgen Klopp had taken charge. There was also a lower-leg fracture in 2018 and another knee issue in 2020 that forced other long-lasting spells on the sidelines.

But each time Gomez overcame such adversity to return and play a part in delivering success to Liverpool.

He appeared nine times in the Champions League en route to glory in 2019 and then made 28 Premier League outings, shining alongside Virgil van Dijk in central defence, when the club’s 30-year wait for a top-flight crown was ended in 2019-20.

He achieved his highest appearance tally to date in the 2023-24 season, playing 51 matches in all competitions – only three teammates had more – and added another Carabao Cup winner’s medal to his collection.

Another boss then took heart to Gomez’s ability and versatility, with Arne Slot counting upon him during the 2024-25 league-winning term.

“I’m full of gratitude and take so much pride in being a part of this club and city,” Gomez said on the 10-year anniversary of his arrival.

Trophies aside, there are few things Kopites want more than the much-loved No.2 to score a goal. Eleven years in, the wait for him to get on the scoresheet goes on.
