A classy midfielder who had no luck with injuries, Jamie Redknapp rose to be Liverpool captain during a decade at the club.

He was actually one of Kenny Dalglish’s final signings in his first spell as Reds manager, but would make his debut under Graeme Souness in October 1991.

That appearance in a UEFA Cup tie at Auxerre made Redknapp, then aged 18, the youngest player to represent the club in a European match at the time.

Having broken into the first-team picture, Redknapp racked up 136 games for Liverpool across 1992-93, 1993-94 and 1994-95, showing off his composure, passing prowess and long-range shooting ability.

The latter of those three seasons included League Cup success at Wembley, with Redknapp featuring throughout the 2-1 defeat of Bolton Wanderers.

Fortune did not favour him or the Reds subsequently, though, with a series of injury issues preventing Redknapp from continuing to express his obvious talent and Roy Evans’ side beaten in the 1996 FA Cup final.

He was in and out until returning regularly to play 40 games during 1998-99 as Gerard Houllier joined and then replaced Evans in the Liverpool dugout.

That form saw the highly popular player appointed the club’s captain ahead of the next campaign – only for his fitness jinx to ruin much of the remainder of his time at Anfield.

He was unable to take to the pitch at all during the remarkable 2000-01 season in which Houllier’s men bagged three cups and secured Champions League qualification, though was invited to lift the FA Cup by his teammates in a touching gesture.

Redknapp marked his last start for the Reds with a goal in a 2-0 victory at Charlton Athletic in October 2001, before departing to join Tottenham Hotspur.
