MatchLiverpool v Newcastle United: Team news

The Reds host the Magpies at Anfield in the Premier League on Saturday night and are set to be boosted by the returns of Jones – absent for the midweek win over Qarabag due to illness – and Konate, who has missed the last three games for personal reasons.

On Friday morning, Arne Slot said: “Ibou trained with us yesterday and trains with us today and will be in the squad tomorrow.

“Curtis is again available. He was sick, as I said, but he is available.”

Liverpool will be without Jeremie Frimpong and Joe Gomez for the 8pm GMT kick-off, though.

Frimpong sustained a muscle issue in the opening minutes of the 6-0 victory against Qarabag, a game Gomez could not play in because of the injury he picked up at AFC Bournemouth last weekend.

Slot told the media: “He [Frimpong] will definitely not be in the squad tomorrow, so he is out for a few weeks. But [it’s] not as bad as we thought he would be out. It’s something positive from something not so positive.

“Joe will not be available but that doesn’t have to take much longer anymore, but he will not be available for the weekend.”

For Newcastle, meanwhile, captain Bruno Guimaraes is a doubt.

He missed last weekend’s defeat by Aston Villa due to injury and was an unused substitute in the away Champions League tie at Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday.

In his pre-match press conference on Friday morning, Magpies head coach Eddie Howe said of Guimaraes’ availability for the trip to Anfield: “It’s slightly unknown at the moment. He did really well to be with us in Paris, that was down to the fact he was desperate to support the players.

“He did very, very light training. He trained with us yesterday but that was more of a test so we’ll see how he is today. This will be where we decide [for Saturday].”

The visitors will definitely be without Joelinton, Tino Livramento and Fabian Schar, while Emil Krafth has not played since November.

Elsewhere for Liverpool, Conor Bradley, Alexander Isak and Giovanni Leoni are long-term absentees, as are Stefan Bajcetic and Jayden Danns.

On Isak, who is recovering from surgery undergone in December, Slot said: “He’s not even on the pitch yet.

“I think it’s called a walker, he’s just out of his walker, so that tells you that he’s not on the pitch and not expecting him on the pitch today or tomorrow in terms of his recovery work.

“That’s going to take a while before he’s back, as we knew.”
