NewsThursday's internationals: Van Dijk and Wirtz score as Liverpool teammates meet

Wirtz had already played a key role in the first-half opener as Germany beat Serbia 2-0 in the UEFA Nations League.

The Liverpool No.7’s feint inside the box was followed by a shot that struck the left post, with the rebound converted by Tom Bischof.

He was not to be denied just past the hour mark, though.

Deftly controlling a pass into the area with his heel, Wirtz deceived the goalkeeper and coolly slotted his finish into the bottom right corner.

Elsewhere in the Nations League, Reds teammates were in opposition as Greece hosted the Netherlands.

Kostas Tsimikas featured for the home side, who established a 2-0 advantage at half-time in Thessaloniki.

Van Dijk found the net in the 59th minute with a clinical header from a corner kick into the area.

It proved to be the start of a comeback by the Dutch – for whom Ryan Gravenberch was introduced at half-time and Jeremie Frimpong remained on the bench – as they recovered to draw 2-2.

In Cardiff, Lewis Koumas led the line for Wales, who came from a goal behind to beat 10-man Norway 2-1.

On Wednesday, meanwhile, Academy midfielder Erik Farkas started and played for an hour of England U18s’ 2-1 win over South Korea at the UEFA Friendship Cup.
