NewsJoe Gomez: We know Brentford's quality and that it'll be difficult

The Reds’ last Premier League outing ended in stalemate as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Luton Town at Kenilworth Road.

Jürgen Klopp’s side then suffered a 3-2 defeat away from home against Toulouse in the Europa League on Thursday evening.

Now, as they get set to return to domestic duties and home soil, Gomez isn’t anticipating any particular surprises from Brentford given they have firmly established themselves as a difficult top-flight opponent.

He told Premier League Productions: “They have proven now they are a very good Premier League side.

“They have good individuals that speak for themselves, but as a unit I think they’ve created a real culture there that other clubs look at and pick things from. It won’t be easy, for sure, we know that. But any game in the Premier League isn’t easy and we’ve just got to try to prepare well and do the best we can.”

He added of returning to the league campaign: “That’s all we can do [move on from the Luton result], that’s what we have to do. Obviously we had the Europa League in between and that sort of resets us in a way, but that’s what the gaffer emphasises and that’s where he leads by example - by dropping it so quickly.

“Reviewing it straight after the game, a quick meeting in the following days and then we’re onto the next. That’s probably the biggest thing in the game, if teams are able to do that and move on from a negative performance it will stand them in good stead.”

Liverpool required a stoppage-time equaliser from Luis Diaz to take a point from the meeting at Luton, despite dominating the game for long periods and creating several clear-cut openings.

Nevertheless, Gomez feels it was a contest that perfectly demonstrated the difficulties of each and every fixture in the Premier League.

“Credit to Luton, they obviously knew the challenge, they knew how to approach it and made it difficult for us, really difficult,” said the No.2.

“They stuck to it for the whole game, but it’s down to us to find the chances. What the gaffer emphasised, we’ve got to approach it the right way from the start of the game.

“We didn’t manage to break them down, but obviously it was special what Lucho did. He came on in the phase of things off the pitch, it speaks volumes for who he is and his character.

“It was a tough game and I think many a team will go there this season and find it difficult.”
