ClubLFC's The Red Way wins top sustainability honour at UK Green Business Awards

Regarded as one of the premier celebrations of the country’s pioneering green economy, the UK Green Business Awards congratulates the companies, projects and individuals driving forward Britain’s transition to a net-zero future.

This win comes five years after the launch of The Red Way, LFC’s official sustainability strategy that is built around the three pillars – people, planet and communities. Since 2021, the club has published annual reports tracking its progress against The Red Way’s key objectives and goals.

The club remains the first major European football team to hold ISO20121 certification – an external verification standard used to hold it to account, with The Red Way aligned to all UN Sustainable Development goals.

Judges praised the 2024-25 season report for its combination of rigorous reporting and clear desire to go beyond compliance by transparently presenting both progress made and challenges faced in the past year.

The report also impressed judges in the way it showcased the club’s “environmental and social wins as well as future plans”.

At Anfield, more than 310,000 single-use items have been avoided since the introduction of reusable cups and food containers.

On ocean health, LFC marked World Earth Day 2025 by launching its Reds for Blue initiative with AXA, the club’s principal partner, aiming to bring a topic rarely encountered in everyday life to a wider audience.

In partnership with the Tara Ocean Foundation, both men’s and women’s players, marine experts and LFC Foundation STEM students were brought together to learn and create content exploring life below the waves.

Rishi Jain, director of impact at LFC, said: “We are so proud to have been recognised for the work through The Red Way report, which is down to the commitment of many colleagues at the club.

“It is a hugely important aspect of the club’s continued sustainability efforts, and acts both a celebration of what we’re doing and a means to report our continued progress across the three pillars of The Red Way.”

Jain recently took part in panel discussions at London Climate Action Week, sharing insights into the club’s ongoing sustainability work and its continuous aspiration to keep developing and improving.
