Q&AInterview: Every word from Bradley Barcola on why Liverpool is his new home

France international Barcola has today completed a transfer to the Reds from Paris Saint-Germain and signed a long-term contract with the club.

He arrives on Merseyside having won the Champions League in each of the past two seasons with PSG, both of which included appearances at Anfield in knockout ties.

Now Barcola can look ahead to having the backing of the famous stadium behind him, a prospect that was firmly on his mind when Liverpool came calling.

Bradley, the deal is done. You’re now a Liverpool player. How are you feeling at this moment?

First of all, it’s a great pride to be able to play for Liverpool. I’m very happy. It took a long time but I’m really happy today to be able to play for Liverpool and all I want is to be on the pitch and be able to play.

How have the last couple of days been for you while you’ve waited for the deal to be completed?

I was with my family, quietly, waiting for it to happen. When I saw the news, I was very happy and surrounded by people I love the most. We celebrated well and all we hope now is to be able to enjoy it together here.

It seems that you were really eager to come to Liverpool. What is it about the club that attracted you to want to play here?

Honestly, it’s the passion of the fans. I had the chance to play twice in this stadium and I saw the atmosphere and how the fans were behind the Liverpool players. When I knew about Liverpool’s interest in me, I didn’t ask questions and I knew it was a very big club for me.

How was it for you as an opponent, then, playing at Anfield? You mentioned the fans and playing at the stadium – how did it feel as an opposition player?

First of all, it was very hard because there are some very good players here and it’s a very good team. And then it’s even harder because of the supporters, the atmosphere that there was. And that’s it, knowing that I can play for this team today is really important to me and that’s all I hope, is to play as soon as possible.

So how much now are you looking forward to playing at Anfield, but as a Liverpool player?

I just want to play, that’s all I’m waiting for. It will be incredible. Once again, when I heard that Liverpool were interested in me, I thought back to the atmosphere in the stadium and once again I was able to feel it. It’s nothing but a joy to play for a club like that.

What kind of qualities are you hoping to bring to Liverpool? How would you describe your style of play?

It’s to bring speed, danger. I think the style of play of the coach and my style of play are very similar, so I think I can only add more of the same to this team. That’s all I hope to do.

Do you feel those qualities are suited to playing in the Premier League?

Yes, I think it’s adapted to the Premier League. I’ve been able to play many times against teams from the Premier League. I think my qualities are very good for the Premier League.

We have a couple of French players in the squad already here at Liverpool. Have you had a chance to speak to Hugo Ekitike or Jeremy Jacquet and if so, what have they told you?

I don’t know Jeremy, but I was able to talk to Hugo, who I met in the French team and in my old club. He was waiting for me to sign the contract, sending me messages often asking me if I was coming or not. I can’t wait to get back together and be able to play with him.

When will you tell Hugo that it’s done?

No, I already said that it is done.

And in terms of the boss, have you had the chance to speak to Andoni Iraola? And if so, what has he told you about your role within the team?

Here, I was able to talk to him several times and he told me that my quality brought a real plus to this team and that he was counting on me, that he had confidence in me. That’s what made me want to join this team, because when you have the confidence of a coach you can only be good on the pitch. So, it’s a very good thing to play with such a good coach.

Regarding your fitness, how soon are you hoping to be available for the team?

Honestly, as soon as possible. I worked hard during the holidays, I did everything I could to stay fit as much as possible, so I feel ready already. I think the coach or the medical [team] will take time, but honestly I think I’m ready to help the team as soon as possible.

You’ve taken the No.29 jersey. We’ve read there’s a reason for you picking that number. Is it true?

Yes, it’s true, it is my favourite number. When I was little, I played EA FC, so I had promised myself to have this number with Alex Hunter and in the end I was lucky to have it, and that’s why I hope to keep it for the whole of my career.

It is a long-term contract you’ve signed here at Liverpool. What is it you’re hoping to achieve during your time here?

I hope to achieve very big things. First of all, winning the Premier League – it’s one of my biggest dreams in my life. So yeah, it is to do that and to stay in this team in the long term – that’s why I signed a long contract – and I hope I can do it.

The Liverpool supporters are very excited that you’ve come to join the club. Have you seen the kind of content they’ve been making online?

Honestly, no, I don’t follow social media very much, so I didn’t see much of what they were saying about me. But if you tell me that they are happy, I am even happier than them and I hope that I will make them proud.

Finally then, what would your message be to those Liverpool supporters who are seeing this interview today?

I will give my all for this team and thank you for accepting me in such a big club, for supporting us. I hope I will make them proud.
