Joe Gomez is hoping his long wait to open his goalscoring account for Liverpool finally ends in the current campaign.

The defender hasn't found the back of the net in his eight-and-a-half seasons with the Reds since joining from Charlton Athletic in 2015.

But fans, teammates and Jürgen Klopp are now all eager to see Gomez's name on the scoresheet in 2023-24, having gone close on several occasions already.

Speaking about it on the latest episode of the We are Liverpool podcast, which is out now, Gomez says: "It starts with me, doesn't it? I have to believe.

"I think the biggest thing is with Pete [Krawietz] I'm never really up for corners, so obviously that plays a role. I'd have a little bit more of a chance maybe.

"But it's weird because in eight years it's never been that apparent and now suddenly...

"Even the gaffer gave me a bit, he said he'd give my wife some money if I scored – it's worth giving it a go!"

Asked if he's thought about how he'll react to breaking his duck, the No.2 replies: "A little bit. I don't really know.

"It's almost comical now, I almost have to play on it a bit. I don't know how I can live up to the goal! Even the lads are giving me a bit of stick.

"In the school team, you couldn't stop me. I was up front literally and then you just get pushed back. But that was sort of the outlet – no pressure, just playing for the school. I did get a few hat-tricks for the school team, that's for sure, but after that...

"I score in training, I get some in training, but it's just not come yet."
