Reaction'I did my homework' - Dominik Szoboszlai explains Marseille free-kick
Dominik Szoboszlai revealed that homework was behind his clever free-kick against Marseille.
The No.8 scored the opening goal in Liverpool’s impressive 3-0 away win in first-half stoppage time by placing his shot from a dead ball underneath the Marseille wall and into the bottom corner.
Post-match, Szoboszlai, who was voted Carlsberg Player of the Match, told TNT Sports: “Yeah, I did my homework. I got told that if no one is lying down maybe I can have a chance to hit it under the wall and no one was laying down so I tried it, and it worked out.”
The Reds produced an excellent display to earn a victory that leaves them in a strong position with regard to securing automatic qualification for the Round of 16 in the Champions League.
A home win over Qarabag on matchday eight next Wednesday would cement their place in the top eight of the league phase.
An own goal by Marseille goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli made it 2-0 at Orange Velodrome before Cody Gakpo scored a late third.
Szoboszlai said: “It’s very good, I’m very happy. It’s really tough, we knew it before, especially with this team, with this coach [Roberto De Zerbi].
“We know what they are able to do and what he is able to do, we saw it in the Premier League when we played against Brighton [& Hove Albion]. But we knew, we were prepared and we take the three points.”
Liverpool are now 13 games unbeaten in all competitions and Szoboszlai added: “We take the positive stuff, obviously, that we are unbeaten, but also we have to take into account that there are games you have to win when you play for Liverpool.
“Especially at home, at Anfield, I think we, the fans, everybody deserves to see nice football but for sure the win and that we maybe couldn’t do it as many times as we wanted but we are on it.
“We work on it, we focus on it a lot, we talk between each other a lot and hopefully now this game [will] help us to keep on going.”
