Fuka Nagano's Japan bowed out of the Women's World Cup at the quarter-final stage after a 2-1 defeat by Sweden on Friday.

Liverpool FC Women midfielder Nagano started and featured for 80 minutes of the last-eight tie at Eden Park in Auckland.

Amanda Ilestedt and Filippa Angeldal scored either side of half-time to put Sweden into a lead that was halved by Honoka Hayashi late on but proved enough to secure passage to the semis.
