InterviewDominik Szoboszlai reaction: Inter win, midfield switch and more
Dominik Szoboszlai was pleased Liverpool's hard work paid off after sealing a late 1-0 win over Internazionale on Tuesday night.
The Reds secured victory in their Champions League clash at San Siro thanks to the midfielder's penalty in the 88th minute.
Szoboszlai made no mistake from the spot after VAR intervened to award a spot-kick following a shirt pull on substitute Florian Wirtz in the closing stages.
The effort was enough to separate the two teams, with Ibrahima Konate earlier seeing a header chalked off when VAR judged there to have been a handball in the build-up.
Read on for the No.8's post-match reaction, speaking to Liverpoolfc.com…
On how important the win was...
It feels very good, especially in these kinds of moments. We fought as a team. We fight until the end and we never give up. At the end the hard work paid off and that's what we did. We'll take the three points home.
On the wait for the VAR check before the penalty...
We just waited for a decision, to be honest. I wasn't really involved. I just focused on myself because I knew that if it's a penalty I was going to take it, so that's what was in my head.
On the change in midfield system...
It's different to how we used to play. But against Leeds it was quite OK, unfortunately at the end we conceded a set-piece, but I don't think it was about any formation or something. The gaffer puts us in this formation and then we have to perform in this formation. If he does something different then we have to do something different. We talked about it and now it worked.
On whether playing in a diamond gives the midfield more control...
Actually, it doesn't matter how we play [in midfield]. If we control the game, we can control in any position or any situation because we have the quality and we have the players for it. We change now for this and let's see what we're going to do on Saturday.
On securing a clean sheet...
It was very important. That's what we talked about. We need everybody. Not only the defenders. It starts from the striker and then the midfielders and then the defenders and then we still have Ali [Alisson Becker]. If everybody gives their best then it's really hard to score against us. We showed that many times but not in the last couple of weeks or months.
On the importance of the win in terms of targeting a top-eight finish in the league phase...
Of course. That's our job and our plan. We now focus on the Premier League a little bit longer and then the Champions League will follow next year.
