ReactionCody Gakpo on a 'step in the right direction' v Leeds and Reds' forward options

The Netherlands attacker broke the deadlock to begin a satisfying evening's work for the Reds at Elland Road, converting from close range in the 35th minute.

Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota then netted doubles before Darwin Nunez completed the scoring late on in the Premier League contest.

After clinching the three points, Gakpo was already looking at building on the positives from the display in west Yorkshire, with Nottingham Forest set to visit Anfield this weekend.

He told Liverpoolfc.com post-match: "Everybody knows we struggled a little bit this season in the away games and then if you play a game like this tonight, this is the way it should feel every game. But it's a good step in the right direction.

"Especially in away games, the first goal is really important to get your spirit even higher and maybe [get] the crowd of the opponent a little bit down. We did it well and after we scored another one, a beautiful goal from Mo. In the second half, we just went for it and it worked out well.

"We won this game, it was a good game, but now we have to look forward and we have to win the next game."

Jota did brilliantly to assist Salah's first of the night prior to scoring himself with a pair of well-taken finishes, as he ended a personal wait to get on the scoresheet.

It was on the night Luis Diaz made a long-awaited return from injury, appearing as an 81st-minute substitute to further bolster Jürgen Klopp's forward options.

"I think everybody was really happy for [Jota]," Gakpo continued. "He deserved it.

"He's working really hard in every game when he plays for the team. Eventually he got the two goals, so I'm really happy for him.

"I think we have a lot of options in the front three positions and I think it makes it even better for us to show [in] every game what you can do.

"Eventually, you have to do it together. So I think if we combine our strengths together, we have a good front three, or front six because we have a lot of options."
