AnalysisA closer look at Curtis Jones' 'big influence' against Newcastle

Back in Jürgen Klopp’s starting XI, Jones was on the scoresheet in the Premier League clash at Anfield, converting from close range in the 74th minute to put his side 2-1 ahead before a flurry of further goals.

As he assessed the encounter in his regular Review Show on LFCTV, former Reds striker Mellor noted the impact Jones had on the night both offensively and defensively.

“Nearly 12.5km covered from Curtis Jones, left side of the midfield three, predominantly more on that left-hand side. Covered a lot of ground,” he said.

“Obviously started [and was] brilliant in the League Cup against West Ham, started against Arsenal, little breather against Burnley [on] Boxing Day but he was fresh and raring to go and a big influence in this game against Newcastle.

“[It’s] quite obvious what one of his strengths is: his ability to win the ball back.

“He started the game well. Putting Newcastle under pressure when they have the ball, winning the ball back, that counter-press – really good and important for Liverpool – and then driving forward.”

Mellor continued: “Really good shift. Distance covered stands out, the most. Possession won in the final third, four. Possession won, 10 – that’s a big number, double figures.

“Tackles won, the most. Shots, five – five shots and he is third on the list, it shows you how many shots we did have. Touches 75, third on the list. Accurate passes, 49.

“Really good game from Curtis Jones.”

Mellor also highlighted the display of Joe Gomez in the defeat of the Magpies, with the versatile defender again shining at left-back.

“No [Kostas] Tsimikas, no Andy Robertson, Joe Gomez filling in brilliantly,” he said. “Defensively, not his natural side of course. He recognises danger and is switched on.

“Really good from Joe Gomez, I think he has filled in really well at left full-back.”
