PreviewChampions League: 16 stats to know about Paris Saint-Germain v Liverpool
The Reds face the holders at Parc des Princes on Wednesday night (8pm BST) for match one of their showdown.
Check out a range of facts and figures about the game below, courtesy of club statistician Ged Rea.
The clubs have previously met six times – in the 1996-97 Cup Winners’ Cup semi-finals, the 2018-19 Champions League group stage and last season’s Champions League last 16 – and have won three games each.
Liverpool have won 15 of their last 20 away Champions League fixtures, including nine of the last 12.
The Reds have registered 12 clean sheets in their last 21 European outings, including five so far this season.
None of Liverpool’s last 31 Champions League games have finished in a draw (22 wins, nine defeats). Only Marseille have ever had a longer run in the competition (32).
Mohamed Salah could make his 85th Champions League appearance for the Reds. Only Jamie Carragher (91) and Steven Gerrard (87) have appeared more times for the club in the competition.
Virgil van Dijk has played every minute of Liverpool’s Champions League campaign so far this season. Hugo Ekitike, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai have also appeared in all 10 games.
Szoboszlai is the Reds’ leading scorer in the competition this season with five goals.
Ekitike played 33 times for PSG in all competitions from 2022 to 2023, scoring four goals. Four of those appearances for the club were in the European Cup, all as a substitute.
None of the Reds’ 36 previous meetings with French clubs have ended in a goalless draw.
Only once have Liverpool knocked the defending champions out of this competition. In 2006-07 they eliminated Barcelona on the away goals rule in the last 16, winning 2-1 at Camp Nou.
Three Reds players are in danger of missing the second leg by receiving a yellow card in this match: Ryan Gravenberch, Curtis Jones and Van Dijk.
PSG are seeking to become the ninth different club to successfully defend the European Cup/Champions League. The others are Real Madrid, Benfica, Internazionale, Ajax, Bayern Munich, Liverpool, Nottingham Forest and AC Milan.
After the Round of 16, they are the leading scorers in the Champions League this season with 34 goals and are one of two teams to have the most different scorers – 13, along with Newcastle United.
PSG have lost only two of their last 11 matches at Parc des Princes in European competition – one of those to the Reds just over a year ago.
Heading into the quarter-finals, Luis Enrique’s side have had more attempts on target than any other team – 240 from their 12 games. Liverpool are third with 206, having played two games fewer.
By winning the trophy last season, Enrique became the seventh man to coach two different clubs to European Cup success, emulating Carlo Ancelotti, Ernst Happel, Ottmar Hitzfeld, Jose Mourinho, Jupp Heynckes and Pep Guardiola.
