For many young footballers, representing your country is a dream. For LFC International Academy Michigan player Zach London, that dream became reality in historic circumstances.

On 14 August 2025, Zach made history when he stepped onto the field for the Marshall Islands men’s national team in the country's first-ever international football match, against the US Virgin Islands in the Outrigger Challenge Cup.

While the game ended in a 4-0 defeat, the occasion marked a landmark moment not only for the Marshall Islands Soccer Federation, but also for a young player whose football journey has been shaped over more than a decade with LFC International Academy Michigan.

At just 15 years and 81 days old, Zach became the youngest player ever to represent the Marshall Islands.

“It’s an incredible feat for Zach to be an international soccer player at such a young age. It’s feasible for him to represent the Marshall Islands for the next 20 years - and we hope that this is the first of many appearances.” says Lloyd Owers, Head Coach of Marshall Islands National Team.

Just days later, Zach earned his second international cap as a substitute against the Turks & Caicos Islands. Despite narrowly losing 3-2 after seeing a strong penalty appeal waved away in the 90th minute, the Marshall Islands once again demonstrated their potential against an established international side accustomed to competing in CONCACAF and FIFA competitions.

So, how did Zach end up being an international trailblazer?

Eleven Years of Development at LFC International Academy Michigan

While Zach's international debut captured headlines, his story is equally one of long-term development, commitment and growth within the LFC International Academy Michigan programme.

Having first joined the academy in first grade, Zach is now preparing for his 11th season with the club.

When asked what he enjoys most about the academy, Zach’s answer was simple.

“The people. It feels like a second home. Everyone is supportive, and it’s a really positive environment to grow as a player and as a person.”

Those words are echoed by his parents, Ted and Danielle, who have witnessed Zach’s development first-hand since he joined Liverpool at the age of six.

“When Zach first started playing soccer with Liverpool at age 6, he was a very shy and quiet person, which translated directly onto the field. Over the years, it has been wonderful to see him gain so much confidence from being a part of Liverpool and playing great soccer.

“He is still a quiet person by nature, but his demeanour changes entirely when he's on the pitch, and his confidence has grown off the pitch as well. He is now seen as a leader among his teammates and friends. We are incredibly grateful that soccer has played such an important role in his personal development.”

For the London family, the academy's influence extends beyond football.

“We have had a very good experience over the years with Liverpool. For any parent, understanding the club culture and the coaches is critically important. We’ve always wanted coaches who are excellent on the field, but who also recognize they have a role to play beyond just teaching technical soccer skills.

“We found that Liverpool’s focus enables coaches to support holistic player development. We truly appreciate how they encourage a focus on growth both on and off the pitch.

“We would also add that we love the philosophy of "You’ll Never Walk Alone." Zach has always felt like he was part of a team, and we, as parents, have always felt like we were part of a larger club community.”

Ready for the International Stage

A defensive midfielder who enjoys influencing every phase of the game, Zach believes his position allows him to make an impact all over the pitch.

While he was already on the team’s radar, Zach earned his international opportunity during a visit to see family in the Marshall Islands in 2025, where he impressed the national-team coaches.

Despite initially being invited as a training player, Zach quickly earned a place in the squad and made history in the nation's first two international matches.

Reflecting on receiving the call-up, Zach recalled: “I was really excited. It is an amazing feeling to be able to represent your country and play at that level, especially being part of a program that is building something new.”

“I was definitely nervous at first stepping onto the field. But at the same time, I felt really proud. There were people cheering, and it was a big moment to play in the first games for the country. It was a mix of nerves and excitement, but overall just an incredible experience.”

For his parents, watching history unfold was unforgettable.

“As a parent, watching him enter his first international match was an absolutely amazing experience, something we – and his family in the Marshall Islands – will remember for the rest of our lives.”

“When Zach came out to warm up and we realized he was going on, it gave us chills. We were so proud of him and so excited for this monumental moment in his life. For both of us, that was the first time we physically and deeply understood the expression "bursting with pride."

Inspiring the Next Generation

The significance of these matches extends far beyond results on the pitch.

Marshall Islands Soccer Federation General Secretary Matt Webb believes players like Zach can help inspire future generations of footballers across the island nation.

Matt said: “We hope that this experience is just the beginning for Zach. He’s got the potential to make a mark in the game. With a nation as small as the Marshall Islands it can’t be understated the impact that he and his teammates had on future generations.

“There will be children in the crowd or at home watching on TV who will be inspired to one-day play for the National Team, and one day they could be playing alongside Zach.”

The Marshall Islands Soccer Federation was founded in 2021 and continues to focus heavily on grassroots participation and long-term development of both the men’s and women’s teams.

“Our ultimate aim is to become affiliated with FIFA, which will enable us to sustainably develop the sport and give every child in the country the opportunity to play soccer. Until then, the federation continues to rely on donations from supporters in the U.S., the U.K. and around the world to fund its programs. Quite simply, these donors may everything we do possible.”

As the national programme continues to grow, Zach is excited about what lies ahead.

“Yeah, I’m excited. The team is evolving, and there have been some changes that I think are going to make us even better. It’s still early for the program, so it’s exciting to be part of building something and seeing how far we can go.”

A Story Still Being Written

Zach's story is remarkable not just because of the records he has set, but because it highlights the impact that a strong development environment can have on a young player.

From a shy six-year-old joining LFC International Academy Michigan to becoming the youngest-ever player to represent the Marshall Islands, his journey reflects the academy's commitment to developing people as well as footballers.

As Zach continues to grow both on and off the pitch, his ambitions remain open-ended.

“I’m still figuring that out, but I know soccer can open a lot of opportunities for me.”

One thing is certain: after making history for his country at just 15 years old, Zach London has already shown what can happen when talent, hard work and the right environment come together.

For everyone at LFC International Academy Michigan, his journey is a source of tremendous pride and a powerful example for the next generation of players dreaming of where football might take them.
