LFC Honours Division Two

Liverpool have been crowned champions of the second tier in English football on four occasions.

Following their entry into the division a year after the club’s formation, in 1893-94, the Reds romped to the title by eight points and won all 14 of their home fixtures.

An immediate relegation from the top flight, however, meant they had to do it again and Liverpool topped the table in 1895-96, with the success once more founded on their home form: 14 wins and a draw from 15 matches.

Eight consecutive years in the First Division followed and included the Reds’ first ever championship victory, in 1900-01.

But then another relegation consigned them to the Second Division for 1904-05, though again they achieved a return at the first opportunity.

Tom Watson’s side scored 93 goals in 34 games and lost only three times that season, to finish two points ahead of Bolton Wanderers.

Liverpool last won the second tier in 1961-62, with the revolutionary force of manager Bill Shankly ending an eight-year spell below the top flight.

His burgeoning team were emphatic victors that campaign, scoring 99 goals and ending the term eight points clear of Leyton Orient in second place.
