Former England captain Ernie Blenkinsop was almost 32 years of age when he joined Liverpool from Sheffield Wednesday, where he had played 424 games from 1923 to 1934.

He had also won the league championship two years in succession in 1929 and 1930.

Blenkinsop started out as an inside-left but was early on converted to left-back. His positional play was said to have been impeccable and his delivery accurate.

He was at Anfield for five seasons, but in only one of those, 1935-36, could he be considered a regular in the side, a campaign in which he missed only five league matches.

Blenkinsop played in the first seven games of the 1936-37 season, before losing his place to Ben Dabbs.

His 71st and final league appearance for the Reds came in a home match against Charlton Athletic on September 4, 1937.
