Former England captain Ernie Blenkinsop was almost 32 years of age when he joined Liverpool from Sheffield Wednesday, where he had played 424 games from 1923 to 1934.

<p>He had also won the league championship two years in succession in 1929 and 1930.</p><p>Blenkinsop started out as an inside-left but was early on converted to left-back. His positional play was said to have been impeccable and his delivery accurate.</p><p>He was at Anfield for five seasons, but in only one of those, 1935-36, could he be considered a regular in the side, a campaign in which he missed only five league matches.</p><p>Blenkinsop played in the first seven games of the 1936-37 season, before losing his place to Ben Dabbs.</p><p>His 71st and final league appearance for the Reds came in a home match against Charlton Athletic on September 4, 1937.</p>
