Fabinho made his first appearance of the World Cup as Brazil finished top of their group, but Darwin Nunez's Uruguay were eliminated from the competition on Friday.

Liverpool midfielder Fabinho was brought in to the Selecao’s starting XI for the clash with Cameroon, for which Alisson Becker was an unused substitute.

A stoppage-time goal from Vincent Aboubakar saw Cameroon gain a 1-0 win at Lusail Stadium, though Brazil still claimed top spot in Group G ahead of Switzerland, who also qualified after seeing off Serbia 3-2.

Tite’s side progress to a last-16 meeting with South Korea to be played on Monday (7pm GMT kick-off).

There was disappointment for Nunez earlier in the day, however.

The striker started for Uruguay as they defeated Ghana 2-0 in their final fixture of Group H, with Giorgian de Arrascaeta scoring both goals before the interval.

But the result was not enough for the South Americans to advance to the last 16, as a late winner saw South Korea beat Portugal 2-1 and join their opponents as qualifiers from the section by virtue of goals scored.

Coming up

Virgil van Dijk will be the first Liverpool player to feature in the last 16, with his Netherlands side set to meet the USA as the next phase begins on Saturday.

That tie will be held at Khalifa International Stadium and is a 3pm GMT kick-off.
