FeatureWe Love You Liverpool: Meet Official LFC Supporters Club... Cyprus
Liverpool FC has more than 300 Official LFC Supporters Clubs (OLSCs) across 100 countries worldwide.
The Reds' fanbase is famous for its passion and loyalty, cheering on both Jürgen Klopp and Matt Beard's squads whether on Merseyside or watching from afar.
Our We Love You Liverpool feature aims to bring supporters closer together to learn more about each other wherever they are based around the globe.
Whether in the UK and Republic of Ireland, on Merseyside itself, in North or South America, Africa, Asia, Australia or elsewhere, fans provide the very foundations that the club is built on.
Here, we meet OLSC Cyprus...
Firstly, tell us about the OLSC and how it came to be…
We were formed in January 1997 when a group of around 20 fanatical supporters led by someone called Simos Sakka got together with a dream of uniting the passionate LFC supporters in Cyprus. Since then, we have grown to over 500 members.
The club exists for the supporters of LFC and membership is open to every Liverpool fan in Cyprus. We have been part of the OLSC network from the very beginning and have been actively participating in the initiatives and guidance of the OLSC team at Liverpool.
A number of very important moments for our OLSC were when we were nominated as one of three finalists for the Best Supporters Club in 2016. We then actually won the award in 2017 and received the accolade during the Player of the Year awards at Anfield. It was very special as it was also the same year we celebrated 20 years as an OLSC together.
This year we are hitting a quarter of a century and to celebrate we have organised 25 charity events throughout the year.
Do you hold any special events throughout the season, or meet-ups for games?
The OLSC helps Liverpool fans in Cyprus feel closer to the club. Our aim is to bring the fans together and create meaningful memories by promoting the 'Liverpool FC' way throughout whatever events we do. The club members meet at specific pubs around the island to watch the games together and quite often organise events before and after the games.
These events more often than not focus on charity, where the OLSC offers a range of Liverpool merchandise via raffle tickets to support the charity organisations we co-operate with, such as LFC Foundation, 23 Foundation, Cyprus Anti-Cancer Society (PASYKAF), Cyprus Children's' Anti-Cancer organisation, alongside a few more.
We organise blood donations at least twice a year and enjoy the occasional five-a-side tournament. We are grateful that our charity work has been acknowledged by the club and we were privileged to have won the LFC Foundation YNWA award twice.
What is so unique about being a Liverpool supporter for your members?
We believe that being a Liverpool FC fan is a lot more than just football - it is a way of life. It is the way you approach every day, promoting togetherness, compassion, passion, perseverance, and unity. Liverpool FC and our fans have built this culture throughout our history.
Has the OLSC ever visited Anfield?
The OLSC visit at least once a year for a match. Our trips to Anfield are always memorable. It's cliché but the hairs really do stand up on the back of your neck every time.
How has it been to follow the club in recent history? There has been plenty to cheer about under Jürgen Klopp and Matt Beard…
Jürgen Klopp is a match made in heaven with LFC. He has grasped and embraced the concept of our beloved club and he has offered us so much already since his appointment in 2015. We can ask nothing more from Jürgen and we are sure he has more to offer until 2026.
If anyone is interested in joining your OLSC, how would they go about doing so?
It is very easy to join our OLSC and anyone who lives in Cyprus and is passionate about Liverpool can do so. All you need to do is visit our website (www.liverpoolcy.com), read all the information and complete the registration online.
