Gareth Taylor felt Liverpool FC Women's efforts were 'testament to the spirit' of his side as they were beaten 2-1 at Arsenal.

Injuries and absences meant the head coach named a 16-player squad for the trip to Emirates Stadium in the Barclays Women's Super League on Saturday.

The Gunners went ahead through Olivia Smith but a fine team move finished by Beata Olsson on 30 minutes drew the Reds level.

Having held off the hosts for most of the second half, Taylor's charges were consigned to a loss by Stina Blackstenius' 87th-minute strike.

"The girls gave absolutely everything," Taylor told Sky Sports post-match.

"You could see the changes we had to make, the compromises we have to make. You can see what we came here with.

"You can see also the changes that Arsenal are able to make, it's just in a different world to us. That alone is testament to the spirit of the girls."

A determined display from the visitors included several important saves from goalkeeper Faye Kirby and a crucial, goal-stopping Gemma Evans block at 1-1.

But Blackstenius' emphatic hit in the final moments means Liverpool remain in search of their first WSL win of the season.

"We're really disappointed with both goals actually," continued Taylor. "Particularly the second one, straight through the middle in a moment where we were pretty much dealing with those types of situations.

"Of course, we knew that Arsenal would have opportunities in the second period. We thought they would come out and press us more than they did. But they didn't.

"And we had chances of our own. I thought we had a really good chance if Mia [Enderby] can get the pass right to Beata to go 2-1 up.

"But this is where we're at, it's a tough moment but it is what it is.

"I think people can see that we are already, as much as I've always been very much about the way I do things and the way we play, you can see that we're trying to make compromises with what we have. Still at this moment we're coming up short."
