The film begins in the summer of 1966, with Liverpool champions of England, and charts a barren spell that lasted until April 1973.
It covers the ups and downs, false dawns and niggling doubts that blighted the club as Shankly wrestled to reproduce the glory days.
And the documentary ends with scenes of unbridled joy, with the parading of both the league title and the UEFA Cup – the Reds’ first European trophy – before legions of adoring fans.
Former players Phil Thompson and Ian Callaghan shed light on the tenacity and dedication required to carry Liverpool from one golden era to the next.
Author and journalist Brian Reade examines the near-misses, the challenges, and the unwavering bond between Shankly and the supporters who never doubted him.
Liverpool poet Jegsy Dodd vividly brings to life the euphoric feeling that gripped Anfield on April 28, 1973, the day the league title was confirmed against Leicester City.
And supporter Linda Clark reminisces on clinching the UEFA Cup against Borussia Monchengladbach in Germany, and the special photo of her and her friend Marion – memories that will last a lifetime.
Shankly’s Second Coming is available to stream on LFCTV GO now and airs for the first time on LFCTV at 3pm and 8pm GMT today, with repeats to follow.
