Wataru Endo’s Japan were eliminated from the AFC Asian Cup after a 2-1 defeat by Iran in the quarter-finals.
Liverpool midfielder Endo played the whole of his nation’s last-eight clash this afternoon, in which they took a lead through Hidemasa Morita’s first-half effort.
But Mohammad Mohebi equalised 10 minutes after the break at Education City Stadium in Qatar, and a 96th-minute penalty converted by Alireza Jahanbakhsh sent Iran into the semis.
