Read an excerpt from Virgil van Dijk’s notes in the official matchday programme for Liverpool’s meeting with Burnley at Anfield today.
“I would like to begin by paying tribute to the Liverpool FC Foundation as they celebrate their Community Day, which is being held to mark the incredible work that they do,” writes the Reds captain.
“Having been fortunate enough to see this work up close I could not be more impressed. Everyone knows we are a football club first and foremost but it is so important that we can be so much more than this, especially in a city like Liverpool where community and standing together are part of the fabric.
“The Foundation allows us to do this as a club and in the years that I have been here I have seen it go from strength to strength, helping more and more people and making a difference in so many ways.
“I could not have more respect for the work that they do day in and day out, whether it is providing support to those who need it, offering opportunities to youngsters or providing education and training.
“Off the pitch, today is their day and I hope they enjoy it every bit as much as they deserve to at the same time as raising even more awareness about the work that they do.”
