ReactionVirgil van Dijk: Now we have to keep going and focus on improving
Virgil van Dijk insisted Liverpool will keep going and focus on the next one, after emphatically getting back to winning ways at Eintracht Frankfurt.
Following four consecutive defeats in all competitions, Arne Slot's men fell behind in Wednesday night's Champions League fixture in Germany too.
But Hugo Ekitike equalised at the home of his former team and headers from Van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate had the Reds in front by half-time.
Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai glossed the final score to 5-1 at the final whistle as Liverpool ultimately dominated at Deutsche Bank Park.
Post-match, the captain reflected on the performance and the result, as well as the importance of remaining intent on improvement.
Read his Q&A below...
On how much Liverpool needed a win and a 'statement' on the night...
Listen, I don't know if it's a 'statement' but obviously it's a win and something to build on. Onto the next.
On whether there's a sense of relief for the squad...
We are - or at least I am - in the football business for quite a while, so I don't think it's relief but obviously we were all disappointed with losing games. It was a positive that it didn't happen at least in my time, losing four in a row, so that's something you have to then deal with as a group - stick together, block out the outside noise and keep working. Today we won, that's it. We got three points on the board. Now we recover and have to be ready for Brentford.
On both centre-backs scoring for the Reds...
My goal obviously was in front of the goalie, Ibou's was a powerful header. The last time we did it was in Milan I think. So, good that we could be important in scoring goals and securing the win of course.
On any frustration with not keeping a clean sheet...
Yeah, we try to keep clean sheets. You keep working so hard and in football obviously you can concede goals. Unfortunately, today it happened. But it's about how you react and in the end it's about winning games, improving and every day trying to be better than the day before. Sounds maybe cliché but that's the only thing we have in our mind and should have in our minds. Like I said, don't get dragged into all the negative things that's going around at the moment. We want to perform, we want to improve and that's the aim we have.
On how difficult it is to 'block out noise'...
Well, for me it's quite easy but I'm obviously quite longer in the business than others. That's definitely a message that we have: the only way you can play your game in the best way possible is to focus on the task ahead, and that's perform as a team. Because that's the only way you can win games. Obviously we have the individual quality otherwise you wouldn't play for Liverpool. We have to do it together in order to be successful. Keep going and don't get dragged in to all that stuff.
