Special tributes to Diogo Jota at Portugal's World Cup fixture
There were special tributes to Diogo Jota at Portugal’s World Cup match against Croatia overnight.
The Round of 32 fixture in Toronto was played in the early hours, European time, of the first anniversary of Jota’s tragic death on July 3, 2025.
The Liverpool and Portugal forward, and his brother André Silva, lost their lives in a road traffic accident in Spain.
During the playing of the Portuguese national anthem prior to the game with Croatia, an image of Jota was poignantly displayed inside the stadium.
Following their 2-1 victory, the Portugal squad took a No.21 shirt – Jota’s international number – onto the pitch amid emotional celebrations.
“We won for us, Diogo and Portugal,” said their captain, Cristiano Ronaldo.
