Cody Gakpo reflected on the 'really amazing' experience of representing Liverpool following the Reds' final home game of the season.

The Netherlands forward saw a goal disallowed via a VAR review during his team’s 1-1 draw with Aston Villa at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.

But Roberto Firmino would later mark his last home appearance for the club with an 89th-minute equaliser to extend their unbeaten run in the Premier League to 10 matches.

Gakpo arrived from PSV Eindhoven in January and, when asked how he has found the early stages of his time on Merseyside, told Liverpoolfc.com: “To be honest, it’s really amazing. The fans, I cannot describe them!

“They are with us even in the bad times and in the good times as well so I really appreciate all of them and let’s make the next season a better one.”

On Firmino’s point-saving, Kop-end finish and the impending departures of the No.9, Naby Keita, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Gakpo added: “I think it was written that he has to score this one!

“I’m really happy for him that he can score this one – not the winner but a really important one and I think everybody will remember him as the legend he is on the pitch and the very good guy he is off the pitch.

“I think, to be honest, [we are] a little bit disappointed. We really wanted to win this game for the points in the league obviously but also for the day it is. We say goodbye to some legends and you want to win the game for them as well, but it didn’t happen. But still a really emotional day I think.”
