NewsReaction: Sheffield United 1-4 LFC Women, Olsson, League Cup hopes and more

The Reds locked up top spot in Group B to secure passage to the quarter-finals by claiming victory at Bramall Lane on Saturday night.

Beata Olsson's brilliant form continued with her netting a hat-trick, and she was later joined on the scoresheet by Mia Enderby, who returned to the home she left in the summer of 2023.

With head coach Gareth Taylor suffering from an illness, the team were led on the evening by Gribble and fellow assistant Amber Whiteley.

See what Gribble had to say in his post-match interview with Liverpoolfc.com…

On the win...

Really pleased with the game, first of all. The performance was always going to be important for the players. We felt it was a game we could have control in. We did have control. I think we used the ball really well in certain parts of the pitch and ultimately it led to chances that we were able to take. Really pleased.

On Olsson's hat-trick...

Really pleased for her. It's not as easy as it looks. She's working incredibly hard on the training pitch, not just with the team but individually on her final actions, her movement. A lot of things we're seeing in terms of a return in the games, I think she's working day in, day out to try to improve. She's a really, really honest, hard-working player. That's all we ask of the players that we work with – they're coachable, they're hard-working, they believe that they can get better and improve. She's really embraced that way of working and hopefully she sees she's getting the returns for it.

On reaching the quarter-finals...

We talked about giving it [the competition] the respect it deserves. Any cup competition is a good opportunity to compete for trophies and that's ultimately what we want to do. We know where we're at right now but we want to be a football club that in the future competes on all fronts, and that was going to start from day one. So, this competition was always going to be treated seriously. We've had tougher opposition in the games that maybe the scorelines suggest – that just shows how good a job we've done to be professional in those performances.

On Enderby scoring...

Another one I'm really pleased for. It doesn't go unnoticed how hard she works as an individual on those actions that you're seeing in games. I think she needed that, I think she deserved it with her performance. We're really proud of her for what she was able to produce on the pitch. The goal is obviously special for her, coming back here to Bramall Lane and it being against her old club. But you could see the relief when she managed to turn it into a goal. Hopefully for her it's proof that working hard on the training pitch will ultimately get your rewards come gameday.

On Emilia Szymczak making her debut and Alejandra Bernabe and Lucy Parry returning from injury...

Emi has been patient, working hard, trying to apply everything that we ask of the players on the training ground and has just been waiting for the opportunity. Opportunities present themselves in football in very different ways, shapes and forms. Tonight was one to come on and help us see the game out. I'm really pleased she was able to get that debut. For Alejandra, it's obviously been a long time coming. A lot of good work with the physiotherapy department in her rehab. She's been training for three or four weeks now and been waiting for this moment. We're pleased that the game gave us an opportunity to give those players the chance to come on and contribute.

On taking charge of the team with Whiteley...

Nothing really changes for us. We're all really aligned. I've worked with Gaz for a long time. We're aligned in the way we work. He was tuned in and watching the game from home. As I'm sure you can imagine, there were still some messages coming through. That's the way we work, everyone plays a big part. It's always more than just the person who mans the touchline – whether that's myself or Gaz. There's a lot of work from a lot of the staff that go into contributing towards a performance and ultimately a result. We certainly enjoyed tonight but miss not having him around. We're looking forward to him being back to good health soon.
