NewsRachel Furness announces retirement from football
The Northern Ireland international spent a little more than three years with the Reds after joining the club from Reading towards the end of 2019.
She went on to make 64 appearances and score 19 goals during her time on Merseyside, serving as vice-captain and being a key part of the squad that restored Liverpool to the Barclays Women’s Super League by winning the Championship in 2021-22.
Her country’s record goalscorer, Furness tallied 95 caps and netted 38 times for Northern Ireland, whom she helped qualify for Euro 2022 – the nation’s first major women’s tournament appearance.
“I’ve been in football a long time and I’d like to think over the years I’ve made a difference, especially with Northern Ireland,” she said. “That’s all I ever wanted; I wanted to make a difference.”
Furness’ club career began at Sunderland and involved spells with Newcastle United, Grindavik, Sunderland again, Reading and Tottenham Hotspur before arriving at Liverpool.
After departing the Reds in February 2023, she wrapped up her career with Bristol City and then a second switch to Newcastle.
