NewsPre-season stadium guide: Yankee Stadium, New York

The Reds are set to stride out at the iconic New York venue on Wednesday July 29, kicking off at 7.30pm local time (12.30am BST, Thursday July 30).

It represents the third friendly the club have played in the Bronx, having also visited in 2014 and 2019.

Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling were on the scoresheet in a 2-2 draw with Manchester City when Liverpool debuted at Yankee Stadium in July 2014.

Five years later, as newly crowned Champions League winners, they again drew 2-2 there – this time versus Sporting CP, with Divock Origi and Georginio Wijnaldum supplying the goals.

Opened in spring 2009 after almost three years of construction, this current arena replaced the original Yankee Stadium, which was in use for more than eight decades.

With a capacity of 47,309 and sized at 1.35 million in square feet, it cost a reported $1.5 billion to build.

“The ballpark is wrapped in four stories of limestone and granite, echoing the facade of its predecessor, while the field geometry matches that of the original,” explains architect Populous.

“The 31,000-square-foot Great Hall through which most spectators arrive is the largest open-air public entry at any sports venue in the world.

“Not only does it make a grand impression on anyone visiting, it also serves a sustainability function, cooling the space naturally with air flowing through its enormous open archways, eliminating the need for air conditioning.”

Yankee Stadium is primarily the home of Major League Baseball team New York Yankees.

It also the home stadium for Major League Soccer club New York City FC, meaning Liverpool’s meeting with Wrexham will be particularly special for new head coach Andoni Iraola.

Iraola concluded his professional playing career with a spell at NYCFC, making 40 appearances that included 20 at Yankee Stadium.

“It was a great experience for me,” he said.

“I think it was a part of my career that probably was not the best one in terms of what happened inside the pitch, but important for the next stage of my career.”

Other events to have been held at Yankee Stadium include boxing, college football and ice hockey, plus major concerts – such as Eminem, Jay-Z, Madonna, Metallica and Paul McCartney.
