Champions LeagueThe opposition lowdown: PSV Eindhoven

Season so far

PSV enter matchday five having collected five points in the league phase so far.

Their sole victory came last month at home to Napoli, who were beaten 6-2 after being reduced to 10 men for the final quarter of an hour.

Their other points have been earned from draws with Bayer Leverkusen and Olympiacos.

Union SG, in the opening round, are the only side to claim a win over the Dutch outfit in Europe up to this point.

Domestically, Peter Bosz's side have enjoyed a good start to the defence of their Eredivisie title, winning 11 of their opening 13 fixtures to sit at the summit of the table.

Key players

Their main sources of goals in 2025-26 overall have been Ismael Saibari (10) and Guus Til (nine).

Joey Veerman and Ricardo Pepi, who scored the winner against Liverpool last season, have chipped in with five apiece.

The veteran Ivan Perisic leads the team for assists (eight), with Veerman one behind the 36-year-old in that statistical category.

Team news

PSV's only current injury absentees are Alassane Plea and Ruben van Bommel, each of whom joined the club during the summer.

Dutch media reports on the eve of the game anticipated Bosz may name the same starting line-up for a sixth match in a row.

"We've got little niggles and tiredness," he said. "But you're not going to feel any niggles and tiredness if you play at such a stadium as this."

What they said

PSV head coach Bosz

"We're going to try to play football, dare to play football. So, when you're better in possession then it's easier than when you have to defend.

"Really important game, also with the points at stake. But this is the same way in every match in the Champions League.

"[I will tell the players] that we have to be PSV, the way we want to play. Liverpool are the same, they have got their own way of playing.

"So, it's all about who is going to do that the best."

Previous meetings

The teams met last January at Philips Stadium to wrap up the inaugural league phase.

Already-qualified Liverpool fielded a much-changed XI and eventually fell to a 3-2 defeat, despite goals from Cody Gakpo and Harvey Elliott.

Wednesday's occasion represents PSV's first trip to Anfield in 17 years.

They were beaten 3-1 in the group stage on that evening in October 2008, when Steven Gerrard recorded his 100th strike for the Reds.
