MatchThe opposition lowdown: Manchester City

Season so far

City entered this matchweek sitting second in the table, six points adrift of leaders Arsenal.

Guardiola's men have acquired 47 points from their 24 league games, winning 14, drawing five and losing five.

Last weekend saw them surrender a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 away at Tottenham Hotspur in the top flight.

In midweek, they secured a spot in the Carabao Cup final by defeating Newcastle United 5-1 on aggregate in the last four.

Key players

Erling Haaland has been City's standout goalscorer so far this season.

The striker has netted 20 times in the Premier League – alongside five assists – in 24 appearances.

Phil Foden has seven goals and two assists, while Tijjani Reijnders has five goals and two assists.

Rayan Cherki has been their best creator to date, providing seven key passes that have led to goals. He has also netted on three occasions in the league.

Team news

Captain Bernardo Silva will be assessed on Saturday to determine if he is fit to return at Anfield after missing the midweek win over Newcastle.

Guardiola confirmed on Friday that Ruben Dias is available after injury, while John Stones has also returned to training.

Jeremy Doku has missed City's last two games and Savinho has not played since New Year's Day. Josko Gvardiol and Mateo Kovacic are long-term absentees.

Recent meetings

Guardiola's side were 3-0 winners of the reverse fixture in November.

Their last visit to L4, however, ended in a 2-0 defeat in December 2024.

Efforts from Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah either side of half-time sealed the points for the eventual champions.

What they said

City manager Guardiola

"They [Liverpool] remain an exceptional team. Top-class manager, exceptional team, no doubt. The moments are the moments, the seasons are the seasons, but I think they have renewed the squad – and they don't renew the squad for one season [but] for many years – so always it remains a good team."

Pre-match stats

  • City are looking to complete their first league double over Liverpool since 1936-37, which was also the last time they won consecutive league games against them.

  • Only Liverpool (nine) and Manchester United (seven) have won more away matches against reigning Premier League champions than City (six).

  • Only Bruno Fernandes (3.4) has created more chances per 90 minutes in the Premier League this season than Cherki (three). It is the most by a player in their debut season (minimum 1,000 minutes played) since Emiliano Buendia in 2019-20 for Norwich City.

  • Antoine Semenyo has scored three Premier League goals against Liverpool, with all three coming at Anfield – including a brace on this season's opening night for AFC Bournemouth. He could become the first player to score against the Reds for two different sides in a single Premier League campaign.
