Get the lowdown on Barnsley ahead of their visit to Liverpool in the third round of the Emirates FA Cup on Monday night.

Season so far

Conor Hourihane's side defeated York City 3-2 and then Peterborough 1-0 in the FA Cup to set up this Anfield tie.

In League One, meanwhile, the Tykes have won eight of their first 21 fixtures and drew 1-1 at Wigan Athletic last time out.

Key players

Davis Keillor-Dunn has been in fine scoring form in the campaign up to this point, firing in 14 times in all competitions.

Next-best in the squad in terms of goals are David McGoldrick and Reyes Cleary (both five), with the latter also credited with a team-leading nine assists.

Adam Phillips, one of Barnsley's current longest-serving players, and Vimal Yoganathan were on the books of Liverpool's Academy.

Team news

Barnsley hope to have Georgie Gent, Marc Roberts, Nathanael Ogbeta and recent arrival Eoghan O'Connell available for the 7.45pm GMT kick-off.

But they will definitely be without their captain Luca Connell due to suspension.

Previous meetings

The clubs last met in round five of this competition back in February 2008.

A shock was caused at Anfield when Brian Howard's 90th-minute strike saw the visitors come from behind to snatch a 2-1 win.

Before that, Barnsley were part of the Premier League in the 1997-98 season and left L4 with a 1-0 victory after Ashley Ward's first-half decider.

What they said

Hourihane, Barnsley head coach

"Just really excited for it, to be able to test ourselves against one of the best teams in the world. We expect a really tough occasion, of course, but one that the lads need to be ready for and fully prepared for.

"I really want the lads to maximise the opportunity that's there and express themselves. At times when we're on the ball, can we play with that courage and play the way that we want to play? But know that we'll suffer and have to sit in a block at times and accept that as well.

"We'll have a game plan in place, of course, and I'm really hoping that the lads do themselves justice on the night because that's what it's all about."

Pre-match stats

  • Barnsley could become the first team since Crystal Palace in April 2017 to win three visits to Anfield in a row.

  • They are also out to be only the second team from the lower divisions to beat Liverpool twice in the FA Cup in L4, following Bolton Wanderers in 1934 and then again in 1993.

  • Hourihane's men have not won any of their last three away matches since winning at Peterborough in the FA Cup second round.

  • They have kept just two clean sheets in their last 25 fixtures.
