MatchThe opposition lowdown: Arsenal

Start to the season

Like the Reds, Arsenal have collected six points from their opening two fixtures in the 2025-26 Premier League season.

They won 1-0 away at Manchester United in matchweek one, thanks to Riccardo Calafiori's first-half goal.

Leeds United were then beaten 5-0 last Saturday at Emirates Stadium, with Jurrien Timber and summer signing Viktor Gyokeres netting doubles.

Summer business

Gyokeres is one of seven additions to Mikel Arteta's squad during this transfer window.

Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace is the most recent, as he also followed Martin Zubimendi, Noni Madueke, Cristhian Mosquera, Christian Norgaard and Kepa Arrizabalaga through the door.

Jorginho, Marquinhos, Thomas Partey, Nuno Tavares, Kieran Tierney and Takehiro Tomiyasu all left the club permanently.

Previous meetings

Both of the encounters in the 2024-25 campaign ended in 2-2 draws.

The first came at Emirates Stadium in October when Mohamed Salah's 81st-minute finish rescued a point for the eventual title-winners.

At Anfield six months later, in the second game after Arne Slot's men sealed top spot, a second-half fightback saw the Gunners recover from a two-goal deficit.

The hosts had raced into a 2-0 lead with goals from Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz in the space of 87 seconds.

Team news

Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus are unavailable for the trip to Merseyside through injury.

The fitness of Norgaard, Ben White and captain Martin Odegaard is being closely monitored.

Eze is in line to make his debut for the club.

What they said

Gunners boss Arteta

"A very important [game] and we want to continue building the momentum that we are in right now. Going to those grounds, those stadiums, against this kind of opposition is what we want and coming away from those big games, winning in a really convincing way – that's the objective.

"They are the champions, they are champions for a reason, because they deserve to be champions. They were the better team last year, the most consistent one, the one that found ways to win in many different ways and we want to be that team this year. We need to go to Anfield with that spirit and that conviction."

Pre-match stats

The last three Premier League contests between Liverpool and Arsenal at Anfield have all been drawn.

The Gunners are winless in their last 12 away games against the Reds since a 2-0 win back in September 2012, with Arteta starting for the visitors that day.

Only matchups between Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur (206) have produced more goals of all Premier League fixtures than Arsenal v Liverpool (198). Since the 2015-16 campaign, it has seen the most goals netted of any fixture (78 in 20 games).

Arsenal have won their first two Premier League games without conceding in 2025-26 – in only one of their last 20 seasons have they won their first three matches, doing so in 2022-23.

Since the start of 2023-24, the Gunners have scored 33 corner goals in the Premier League – more than any other side in Europe's top five leagues in that timeframe.

Arsenal are unbeaten in their last 15 Premier League away fixtures since a 1-0 loss at Newcastle United in November last season.

Timber has had a hand in five goals in his last five league starts (two goals and three assists).
