The Liverpool FC Women forward played the whole of the last-16 encounter in Cali, Colombia.
Canada captain Florianne Jourde gave her country a lead in the second half, but Jone Amezaga quickly equalised for the reigning champions.
Silvia Lloris then provided a winner for Spain in the 81st minute, meaning Smith and Canada now head home.
