Neil Mellor highlighted the creative qualities of Alexis Mac Allister and defensive importance of Joe Gomez in his assessment of Liverpool’s 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
During his regular post-match Review Show, which is now available to watch on LFCTV GO, the former Red analysed a memorable Premier League victory secured thanks to Darwin Nunez’s header in minute 99.
“This team is unbelievable. Determination, belief, persistence, quality, all in abundance to find that goal, what a moment!” said Mellor.
“Mac Allister was absolutely outstanding, he created six chances, he ran the most and he has that bit of class about him, that awareness, as we saw for the brilliant ball for the goal.
“He played in a more advanced role rather than a No.6, and he thrived in it. He always wants the ball and wants to make things happen, he has a lot of quality.”
Mellor also praised the contribution of Gomez, who started the game at the City Ground in midfield, before later moving to full-back.
“Joe had a dress rehearsal against Southampton in that role and the manager saw he can do a job there to allow Mac Allister to go further forward,” he added.
“I have to say, I was really impressed with Joe, he also played at left-back and ended at right-back!
“He has good awareness and he sees the picture and stops the opposition counter-attacks.”
