Nine-man Liverpool were beaten 2-1 by Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Saturday evening.

Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota both received a red card at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as an injury-time Joel Matip own goal saw the home side record a late victory.

Cody Gakpo had earlier levelled in added time at the end of the first half for the Reds, following Son Heung-min's opening goal in the 36th minute.

Team news

Gakpo replaced Darwin Nunez, who was restricted to the bench following a fitness concern, in the single change from the last top-flight outing.

Trent Alexander-Arnold returned to the squad after missing the previous four games.

Liverpool: Alisson, Gomez (Konate, 73), Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson, Mac Allister (Gravenberch, 80), Szoboszlai, Jones, Diaz (Endo, 73), Salah (Alexander-Arnold, 73), Gakpo (Jota, 46).

Unused subs: Kelleher, Nunez, Elliott, Tsimikas.

First half

Liverpool began on the front foot in the capital, seeing a Luis Diaz effort blocked behind and Alexis Mac Allister flash a shot wide inside the opening five minutes.

Tottenham responded with pressure of their own at the opposite end, but it was the Reds who worked the first real opportunity of the game after 13 minutes.

Dominik Szoboszlai's diagonal pass set Liverpool down the left, with Diaz and Andy Robertson combining to allow Gakpo to turn and shoot inside the area.

The No.18's initial effort was saved well by Guglielmo Vicario, with the home goalkeeper hauling himself up quickly to keep out Robertson's driven follow-up.

As the contest continued with both teams exchanging attacks, Liverpool were reduced to 10 men shortly before the half-hour mark.

Jones was initially handed a yellow card for a challenge on Yves Bissouma, which was upgraded to a red card by referee Simon Hooper after a VAR review.

Despite being a man down, Diaz then had the ball in the back of the net a short while later, as he latched on to a Mohamed Salah pass on the break to fire into the bottom corner of the goal.

The offside flag was raised to deny the winger's celebrations, though, and the home side broke the deadlock instead a minute later through Son, who netted from close range.

Liverpool battled on, with Richarlison striking the post, but as half-time loomed it was the visitors who added to the scoreline.

Gakpo collected the ball inside the box as Virgil van Dijk's knockdown found the forward, before turning to shoot past Vicario to level the contest in the fourth minute of added time.

Second half

Liverpool opted for a change at the interval, with Jota replacing Gakpo after he required treatment in the aftermath of his goal.

Tottenham began the second half on the front foot, forcing Alisson Becker into two brilliant saves, with the No.1 first denying James Maddison's curling effort, ahead of keeping out Son's volley.

The latter again had the ball in the back of the net on the hour, though was also left denied by a raised offside flag as he turned the ball into the far corner.

With 20 minutes remaining, Liverpool were reduced to nine men as Jota picked up two yellow cards in quick succession.

Tottenham pressured the Reds with the extra personnel, dominating much of the ball as Jürgen Klopp's men played on the counter, while introducing Alexander-Arnold, Ibrahima Konate, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch from the bench.

Liverpool were cruelly beaten in the sixth minute of added time, however, as Matip inadvertently turned a low cross into his own net.
