NewsMegan Campbell announces retirement from football
Former Liverpool FC Women defender Megan Campbell has announced her retirement from football.
Campbell spent two seasons with the Reds after signing in the summer of 2021 and was part of the squad that returned the club to the Barclays Women’s Super League by winning the second-tier title in 2021-22.
She earned 57 senior caps for the Republic of Ireland and played mainly at left-back and centre-back during her time with Liverpool.
Campbell was renowned for her incredible long-throw and, indeed, set a new Guinness World Record for the farthest distance football throw-in by a female earlier this year (37.55 metres).
The 32-year-old joined the Reds after a five-year spell with Manchester City, where she won a domestic treble and played in the Champions League. Previously, she had been in the American college system with the Florida State Seminoles.
After her departure from Liverpool following the 2022-23 campaign, Campbell spent a brief period with Everton before joining London City Lionesses, who she helped win promotion to the WSL before leaving this summer.
She said: “It’s been a while coming, but it’s something that I’ve struggled accepting for a long time now. Football has been my life for over 25 years.
“It has given me so many amazing opportunities, allowed me to travel the world and to meet some of the best people. It has helped me to become the person I am today.
“Unfortunately, I knew that playing the sport I love, and have given everything to, would have to end some day. I just never wanted to believe that it would have come this soon.”
Everyone at Liverpool FC wishes Megan the best of luck for the future.
