MatchManchester United v Liverpool: Team news

Alisson has missed the last seven games due to injury and been joined on the sidelines by fellow goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili in recent weeks.

As a result, Freddie Woodman stepped in between the posts for his first Premier League start for the Reds against Crystal Palace last weekend.

On the availability of Alisson, head coach Arne Slot told his pre-match press conference on Friday: "Ali hasn't trained with us yet. [He is] very close to training with us, I have to hear today from the medical staff if he is able to train today or either tomorrow or otherwise the start of next week.

"He is very close but of course, also we don't want to take any risks, because that's never what you do with a player and that's also not what we do now."

Kerkez has been a concern for the trip to Old Trafford after departing training earlier in the week, though he was present in Friday's session.

"Milos has had some niggles, left the training pitch not yesterday but the day before. But I expect him to either train today [Friday] or tomorrow," said Slot.

Mohamed Salah has been ruled out with the minor muscle problem that forced him off versus Palace.

The Egyptian is, however, expected to be available for selection again before the end of the season and his departure from the club.

Slot continued: "As we know from Mo, he's always working incredibly hard during the season when he's fit, but definitely also when he is injured to be back as soon as possible.

"That's what he's trying now so well. Usually he's earlier fit than other players after a minor injury – because he has a minor injury. We expect him indeed to be back in the final part of the season, but not for Sunday."

Stefan Bajcetic, Conor Bradley, Hugo Ekitike, Wataru Endo and Giovanni Leoni are long-term absentees for Liverpool.

United, meanwhile, are optimistic about welcoming Matheus Cunha back to their squad.

The attacker missed out on their victory over Brentford at the beginning of the week but has since resumed light training.

Luke Shaw should be available, despite coming off in the second half against the Bees.

"We're in good shape really," United boss Michael Carrick told reporters. "Matheus has done a little bit of work, so we're hopeful. We're not sure but we're hopeful.

"Matthijs [de Ligt] is still a little bit further [off] and not involved in the game. Other than that, we are in good shape."

Also certain to miss the contest is Lisandro Martinez, who is serving the final game of a three-match suspension.

On facing Liverpool, Carrick added: "I'm fully aware of the situation in the league and how close it is between us, but that's not something we're really focused on going into this game. I think it's a one-off game.

"They've got terrific players, they're a good team and they won the league last year. We obviously respect everything that goes into the game. We're treating it as that – as a one-off game. The league position is what it is but Sunday is a whole different ball game."
