Jack Cox was an exciting winger who represented Liverpool with great individual and collective success at the turn of the 20th century.
He arrived at Anfield in 1897 for a transfer fee of £150 after a high-flying season with Blackpool.
“A brilliant but erratic genius,” Cox was once described as in a 1904 matchday programme. “His great weakness is a tendency to over-elaboration when in possession of the ball, but when the mood is on him, there is no hesitation, no finessing to discover the way towards goal.”
Cox had the ability to play on both flanks for the Reds and scored an impressive 80 goals from his 361 appearances.
He was an instrumental figure for manager Tom Watson in the team that won the First Division in 1900-01 – the club’s first top-flight title triumph.
Cox drew plenty of interest from other clubs but stayed at Liverpool, despite them subsequently falling into the Second Division.
And he played his part in the achievement of winning Second and First Division titles in back-to-back seasons in 1904-05 and 1905-06.
At the time of writing, the Liverpool-born star remains in the top 25 goalscorers of all time in Reds history.
