NewsLiverpool's Greatest - No.88: Sam Raybould
Years: 1900-1907
Appearances: 226
Goals: 130
Trophies: First Division (1900-01, 1905-06), Second Division (1904-05)
A Liverpool star at the beginning of the 20th century, Sam Raybould was the first player in the club’s history to score 100 goals.
The attacker, who arrived from New Brighton Tower, required just 164 appearances to bring up his groundbreaking century of strikes.
“He is a dangerous player when in possession and backs who make mistakes might as well concede a goal straight away,” newspaper reports from the time read.
Raybould’s team-leading 17 goals fired the Tom Watson-managed Reds to their first top-flight league title in 1900-01.
Another achievement followed in 1902-03 when he became the first Liverpool player to hit the 30-goal mark in a single season.
Raybould was then subject to a seven-month suspension after agreeing to a rule-breaking transfer to Portsmouth. The move down south fell through as a result.
His output was sorely missed at Anfield and a return halfway through the term could not prevent relegation to the Second Division.
The club did make an immediate return to the top flight and remarkably won it the following year, with Raybould scoring 30 times in the league across those two seasons.
He signed off in style at the club by delivering his 130th and final goal in his farewell appearance at the conclusion of 1906-07.
Presently, only 10 players have scored more for the Reds than Raybould.
