NewsLiverpool's Greatest - No.76: Luis Diaz

  • Years: 2022-2025

  • Appearances: 148

  • Goals: 41

  • Trophies: League Cup (2022, 2024), FA Cup (2022), Premier League (2024-25)

Luis Diaz made a dazzling impact after arriving at Liverpool and left as a Premier League champion.

The Colombian forward was a January 2022 acquisition from FC Porto and injected fresh trickery, explosive pace and hard work into a quadruple attempt that season.

Instantly settling into Jürgen Klopp’s attack, he started all three finals as the Reds won the League Cup and FA Cup but were beaten in the Champions League showpiece, alongside finishing runners-up in the league.

Diaz’s momentum at Anfield was halted when he lost six months to serious injury during 2022-23, but he would recover to play 101 games over the course of the two seasons that followed.

There were 13 goals from ‘Lucho’ across 2023-24 as Liverpool collected another League Cup, Diaz playing every minute of the final against Chelsea in which a depleted Reds squad claimed victory in extra-time.

He upped that figure to 17 during what would prove to his final campaign with the club – and a championship-winning one too.

Diaz bagged two goals in an early-season 3-0 win at Old Trafford as new head coach Arne Slot set about steering his side to the Reds’ 20th title, with the No.7 dually used on the left flank or as a central striker as required.

He also became the 16th man to score a hat-trick for Liverpool in European competition with an Anfield treble against Bayer Leverkusen in November 2024.

The season ended with a Premier League winner’s medal wrapped around Diaz’s neck – just reward for his 36 appearances and 18 goal contributions in the triumph – before he departed that summer to join Bayern Munich.

“Three-and-a-half years that I’ll treasure forever,” he said. “I arrived with all the dreams in the world, and I am leaving proud of everything we achieved together.”
