Match reportLiverpool suffer late 3-2 defeat at Bournemouth

Amine Adli scored with the final kick of the game to earn the hosts all three points after the Reds had recovered from two down to draw level through goals from Virgil van Dijk and, in the 80th minute, Dominik Szoboszlai.

Evanilson and Alex Jimenez had put Bournemouth 2-0 up just after the half-hour mark, with Van Dijk halving the deficit on the stroke of half-time.

Another fine free-kick by Szoboszlai then appeared to have secured at least a point for Liverpool, but there was to be a sting in the tail as Adli struck deep into stoppage time to end the visitors’ unbeaten run at 13 games.

Team

Cody Gakpo came in for Hugo Ekitike in Liverpool’s only change from the midweek win in Marseille.

Liverpool: Alisson, Gomez (Endo, 35), Van Dijk, Kerkez (Robertson, 46), Wirtz, Szoboszlai, Mac Allister (Ekitike, 59), Salah, Gakpo (Ngumoha, 73), Frimpong (Jones, 59), Gravenberch.

Unused subs: Mamardashvili, Woodman, Nyoni, Ramsay.

First half

Amid the driving rain and wind, Mohamed Salah curled an early sighter over the crossbar after being teed up by Florian Wirtz.

Most of the attacking threat was being offered by Liverpool and Salah, having been played in by Szoboszlai, saw a cut-back aimed for Gakpo cut out, before a last-ditch clearance prevented Szoboszlai from connecting with Wirtz’s cross.

But, midway through the half, Bournemouth took the lead when Evanilson fired Alex Scott’s pull-back home from close range. To compound matters, Joe Gomez picked up an injury by colliding with Alisson Becker in the act of trying to stop Evanilson from scoring.

Wataru Endo was readied, though was unable to enter the field as the ball did not go dead until several minutes later, when the hosts doubled their advantage.

James Hill’s pass was weighted nicely into the path of Jimenez, who had got the run on Milos Kerkez before finishing.

The Reds responded well and halved the deficit in the final minute of the half as Van Dijk darted to the near post to meet Szoboszlai’s in-swinging corner with a deft, glancing header.

Second half

Given the game state, it was little surprise that Liverpool – now with Andy Robertson at left-back – began the second half on the front foot.

Clear-cut chances remained at a premium, however, and Arne Slot sought to add more cutting edge by introducing Ekitike, along with Curtis Jones, on the hour.

Ryan Gravenberch went close with a left-footed hit from the edge of the area but, soon after, Szoboszlai located the bottom corner his teammate had been aiming for in style.

Salah’s back-heel turned a dead ball into a rolling one and the No.8 dispatched a low, unstoppable strike with his instep.

It felt like a late Liverpool winner may be on the cards but instead, Bournemouth snatched all three points when Adli converted amid a goalmouth scramble following a long throw-in.
