The Red Way, Liverpool FC’s pioneering sustainability strategy, has been recognised with the Transformation Award at the Sport Positive Awards 2025 – a reflection of the club’s ongoing commitment to sustainability excellence.

This accolade celebrates sports organisations that champion sustainability, have adopted a strategic approach to addressing the climate and biodiversity crises, and are driving progress towards environmental and climate justice.

As a certified priority for Liverpool FC, The Red Way is a shared commitment that unites staff, players, partners and fans, and is integrated throughout all aspects of the club.

Since its launch in 2021, The Red Way has evolved into a comprehensive and ambitious strategy centred on LFC’s three core pillars: Our People, Our Planet and Our Communities.

By closely aligning with international standards and the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework, the club has made significant operational improvements and implemented thoughtful environmental initiatives.

For example, Liverpool FC has cut its carbon emissions by 15 per cent compared to the 2019-20 baseline, planted more than 1,000 trees and hedges around club sites, and introduced 60,000 bees into allotments and green spaces to support biodiversity.

In addition, the club’s innovative collaboration with 1PointFive saw the launch of the world’s first football jersey with its carbon footprint removed. Designed to mark the 20th anniversary of the 2005 Champions League triumph in Istanbul, the shirt is more than a tribute, it’s a symbol of inspirational progress.

Every jersey sold triggered the purchase of carbon removal credits equal to the emissions from production and distribution. As of June 3, 2025, it became the bestselling LFC label item since launch, helping to deliver measurable positive climate impact, raise fan awareness and set a new benchmark for sustainable products in sport.

Rishi Jain, director of impact at LFC, said: “The transformation award highlights the scale of progress Liverpool FC has made over the past four years in embedding sustainability into everything we do internally and externally in the wider community. It’s a recognition of the collective effort from everyone involved.

“This accolade strengthens our determination to keep striving to lead the way, ensuring that The Red Way drives lasting change for our people, our planet and our communities.”
