Liverpool FC marks 41st anniversary of Heysel Stadium disaster

The disaster occurred before the European Cup final in Belgium between Liverpool and Juventus on May 29, 1985.

Events in Block Z of the stadium that night led to the deaths of 39 people and left hundreds more injured.

Respects will be paid across the club today, and our thoughts are with all those affected by the tragedy, as always.

These commemorations will include the unveiling of ‘Forever Bound’, a new permanent Heysel memorial located at Anfield.

Formed of two scarves knotted together to symbolise unity, solidarity and a shared bond of remembrance between Liverpool and Juventus, it is inscribed with the names of each of the 39 fans who lost their lives.

Officials from both clubs will observe a period of silence and lay wreaths at the new memorial this morning.

“Today, as a club, we come together to honour the memory of the 39 people who lost their lives at Heysel and remember all those affected by this tragedy,” said Billy Hogan, Liverpool FC CEO.

“Our thoughts, as always, are with the families and everyone affected on this poignant day, which will always hold a lasting place in the history of our club.”
