Liverpool FC Women's record goalscorer Natasha Dowie has been presented with a specially commissioned handmade Liver bird statue in recognition of her becoming the club's first official women's ambassador.

After announcing her retirement from professional football in September 2023, Dowie accepted the newly created role and works closely with the girls' ProGame Academy, boys' Academy and the LFC Foundation girls' programmes among other roles.

Dowie scored an unmatched total of 47 goals for the Reds across two spells, also lifting the Women's Super League twice during her time at the club. Her achievements were recognised at the WSL Merseyside derby at Anfield earlier in the season with a mosaic tribute and guard of honour.

Six months into the role, a special presentation took place ahead of the men's fixture with Chelsea on Wednesday night to celebrate her new position within the club.

Mike Cox, senior vice-president of merchandising, and Susan Black, communications director and executive director of LFC Women, joined Dowie pitchside to make the official presentation on behalf of LFC.

Speaking about the honour, she said: "This presentation sums up the club and how unique it is. It's such an honour to receive this beautiful Liver bird from LFC. The Liver bird represents the city of Liverpool and that means a lot.

"It's been an incredible first six months in my new ambassador role and I've enjoyed every second. Getting to see and understand the hard work that goes into running a football club, meeting new faces every week and building strong relationships and friendships has been amazing.

"I've also enjoyed travelling and meeting our international supporters who are so passionate about the club no matter how far away they are from Liverpool. It's also been amazing from a coaching side supporting the Academies. I look forward to seeing what's next."

She joins club legends like Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher, who have both received the bespoke Liver bird from the club's merchandising team.

LFC Women face Tottenham Hotspur at Prenton Park on Sunday in a 2pm GMT kick-off. Tickets for that game and their other remaining 2023-24 home fixtures – clashes against West Ham United, Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United – are on sale here.
