An annual Liverpool supporters visit to Monchengladbach took place earlier this month.

A connection between the Reds and German outfit Borussia Monchengladbach dates back to the 1970s, when the club met three times in European competition.

In the 1973 UEFA Cup final, Liverpool beat Gladbach 3-2 on aggregate to claim their first European honour.

They met again in the 1977 European Cup final in Rome, where Bob Paisley’s men were 3-1 winners to lift that trophy for the first time.

The series continued with a clash in the European Cup semi-finals a year later. The Reds prevailed once more, taking a 4-2 victory over two legs.

Fans from both clubs formed a bond of friendship during these matches, and in 1991, Gladbach fans made a special gesture with a donation of approximately £8,000 for the Hillsborough families.

Since 1992, supporters of Gladbach have made an annual pilgrimage to Liverpool to watch the Reds – a tradition that has been reciprocated by a group of Kopites.

On the latest trip, from Friday May 15 to Monday May 18, visiting Liverpool fans saw Gladbach defeat Hoffenheim 4-0 at their Borussia-Park home.

Graham Agg, organiser of the annual friendship visit to Gladbach since 2007, said: “The LFC supporters in Germany were a credit to the club and the city of Liverpool.

“The hospitality we received from the Gladbach supporters was unbelievable.

“We are already looking forward to next year’s friendship visit, which will be the 20th anniversary since the first friendship visit by LFC supporters in 2007.”
