Luke Chambers’ early goal was followed by a Florian Wirtz effort to put the Reds into a healthy and merited half-time lead.

But a flurry from the opposition during the second period – Brendan Aaronson, Dominic Calvert-Lewin (two) and Sean Longstaff getting on the scoresheet – gave Leeds the victory at Soldier Field.

The majority Liverpool crowd had something to celebrate within seven minutes of kick-off.

Dominik Szoboszlai’s low corner from the right towards the near post was flicked on its way by Milos Kerkez.

The ball fell kindly to Chambers in the centre of the box and he capitalised fully with a confident finish beyond Alex Cairns in the Leeds goal.

The Reds’ own goalkeeper was called into action to preserve that early lead in the 13th minute.

A dangerous Jayden Bogle delivery curled in from deep on the right flank was glanced goalward by Lukas Nmecha.

Nmecha’s header was on course to nestle in the bottom left corner – but Giorgi Mamardashvili reacted to quickly to scoop the ball away.

The same Leeds forward also dragged a low strike wide of the left post midway through a half that was featuring some sweet Liverpool passing exchanges.

If felt like Andoni Iraola’s men were on the cusp of a second goal, and it might have come when Rio Ngumoha shimmed into space and slid a cross along the six-yard box.

Leeds were undone, though no Reds teammate was able to connect.

But they did make it 2-0 five minutes before the break.

Trey Nyoni’s clipped pass to the right edge of the area was hooked back into the centre by Jeremie Frimpong and Wirtz arrived to cushion a shot into the net.

There was a comfortable save for Mamardashvili as Anton Stach tried his luck from distance prior to half-time.

Four changes for Liverpool during the break included the introduction of Ryan Gravenberch for his first appearance of pre-season.

Leeds threatened as Calvert-Lewin attacked the box in the left channel, with his hit across goal evading both the far corner and the supporting Bogle.

They did halve their deficit in the 60th minute, however.

Kerkez lost possession in his own territory and Ethan Ampadu fed a pass left to Aaronson, who coolly controlled the ball and rolled it under Mamardashvili.

In response, Federico Chiesa was foiled in an attempt to turn home a Kieran Morrison knockdown after Kerkez’s lofted cross.

Leeds soon drew level as a long throw from the left side was helped on by Joe Rodon and reached Calvert-Lewin at the far post to touch over the line.

Their swift turnaround continued with 73 on the clock as the Whites benefited from an oddly fortuitous goal.

Longstaff was primed to meet a low cutback into the area and in the process of making contact as a slight Curtis Jones touch in trying to clear sent the ball off him and bobbling into the bottom corner.

And Calvert-Lewin further extended the Leeds advantage five minutes from the end, guiding a firm header in off the crossbar from another flick-on.
