Cody Gakpo opens up about life on Merseyside, his footballing inspirations, family roots and much more in our new ‘A Day With…’ video feature.

We recently joined the Liverpool forward for a day to find out more about how he has settled in to his new surroundings since signing for the club in January.

Gakpo talks through his routines as presenter Rubi Deschamps journeys with him to training, and we go up close to share in his interactions around the AXA Training Centre, discovering the nickname he has been given by one teammate.

The Dutchman then visits the city’s Baltic Triangle, where he discusses the impact Reds fans have made on him and his desire to experience trophy success here.

“When you play home or away, you always hear them, you always feel the support they give – always positive as well,” the No.18 says. “That’s why you’re going to go the next step, a little bit further, you want to fight for them as well. It’s together.”

He adds of his growing affection for his new home: “Yeah, I was on vacation and everything, back home in the Netherlands and at one point I started missing to be here, because I really like it here.

“When you play at a club like Liverpool, I never won a prize now here but I can imagine it feels slightly different than with other clubs.”

Recalling his childhood passion for football, Gakpo also details the influence of his father as he made the first steps towards a professional career in Eindhoven.

“Obviously where I’m from we all support PSV, so then in the team we had Afellay, he played for PSV and played for Barcelona after, so everybody in the city wanted to be him,” he explains.

“Then you had Messi, Ronaldo and all those big names. They all were inspirations.

“When I started playing football my dad trained me a lot. Maradona and Pele were his heroes back in the day so he always showed clips of them to me. That’s how I got to know them as well, they’re all brilliant.”
